PRIDE FASHION WITH AN IMPACT

Pride month is officially here and is kicking off with a summer-long celebration of diversity, acceptance, love, glitter and pride-themed fashion capsule essentials. Building up to the Paris pride weekend at the end of June, festivities in the French capital will include everything from parades and exhibition to fêtes and soirées that will bolster equal rights and celebrate sexual and gender diversity.

A number of fashion brands are taking a stand by marching in parades, contributing megabucks to support LGBTQ+ movements and designing pride-themed gears by the bucketloads. Brands collaborating with the gay community is nothing new: In 2017, Italian luxury brand Gucci, celebrated pride by giving us an astonishing collection of bold and beautiful with their infamous rainbow-themed wedge sneakers.

American apparel has been in support of the pride movement for years, designing pride-themed collection of slogan tees each year and donating 100% of its net proceeds to the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center.

Ralph Lauren has been supporting the pride movement and the LGBTQ+ community for more than 25 years. They took also a stand this year with a dedicated pride capsule collection for men, women and children, of which its profits will be donated to the Stonewall Community Foundation. In celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community, the American label remade its signature Polo Pony in the colors of the rainbow and launched the #RLPride hashtag as well as a passionate marketing campaign.

Italian fashion brand Diesel recently launched an exclusive Pride capsule collection to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The collection consists of tees, socks, briefs, bodysuits, shorts, hats and features a rainbow motif and a text rendered in rainbow colors. Diesel also stated that they will be supporting the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, by donating a percentage of their proceeds to the non-profit organization that advocates for equality in sports and promotes tolerance worldwide.

Contemporary American fashion designer Todd Snyder has a particularly intimate bond with pride this year. He launched a pride capsule collection to honor the “seminal milestone in the history of New York City.” – the tumultuous years following the Stonewall riots. The collection campaign features the likes of Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Milk, and Jenna Lyons among others. The #TSPride designer spoke to Women’s Wear Daily about his inspiration and in which he proudly spoke highly of his predominantly gay team “As a New Yorker now with an amazing staff, over half of which are gay, I wanted to do something meaningful. My team is very important to me and we support each other’s values”. Sydney also stated that 20% of sales will be donated to the National Park Foundation to support the Stonewall National Monument.

It’s commendable that brands are showing remarkable support to the pride community and making tremendous efforts to be inclusive within their own structures. Research has it that the vast majority of millennials (75% respectively) care about brands that engage with them and give something back to society. According to J Walter Thompson Intelligence, 65% of Millennials, only 48% of Gen Z’ers identify as completely heterosexual and 56% of USA Gen Zers know someone who uses gender-neutral pronouns. This makes a lot of sense as to why fashion brands are fervently supporting the pride cause and creating collections that caters to the LGBT+ community.

At VISORE, we stand firmly with the LGBTQIA+ community. We honor diversity and individual uniqueness and continually strive to grow our community as one where difference is predominant. Happy Pride from the entire VISORE Lab team!
